Description:
A Backward Roll is a basic gymnastics movement that teaches backward rotation. Although this skill is considered a ‘basic skill’ by gymnast-standards, it is advised that first-timers perform this skill over a soft surface and in a controlled environment. For best results, maintain a rounded position in the upper back and keep head ducked down by focusing on having the chin pressed against the chest during the rolling phase.
Process:
- begin in a stand
- squat down as far as possible and bring hands beside ears
- curl the back and drop head forward by pressing chin to chest
- to build backward rotation, sit onto the floor and simultaneously push forward with both feet while maintaining contact with the floor
- allow feet to leave the floor and roll from the small of the back to the top of the back until your hands make contact with the floor
- the tip of fingers should make contact with the floor before the palm, and elbows should be pointed towards the ceiling
- maintain pressure against the floor with both hands, and keep a tight tuck with chin tucked against chest
- roll over completely until feet makes contact with the floor
- finish in a squat position and rise up to a stand
