Description:

A Cat Stretch is a stretch that is commonly used to increase flexibility in the chest and upper back.  When performing this stretch, focus on pushing the armpit into the ground.  A gentle push on the shoulders or upper back by a spotter or workout partner can also improve the stretch.  This stretch is especially important after a heavy upper back workout so that a good range of motion in this region can be maintained.

 

Process:

  • begin in a pushup position and shift body backwards by bending at the hips and knees
  • buttocks should face the ceiling and back should be slightly arched
  • push armpits down to the floor while keeping head slightly up
  • lower armpit as much as possible until stretch is felt
