Handstand Forward Roll

Description:

Handstand Forward Roll is an important movement for those that are in the process of learning a handstand.  When performed correctly, it serves as one of several methods to transition out of a handstand – particularly when you feel your body is tipping over.  In order to perform a smooth ‘roll out,’ maintain constant downward pressure and tuck chin into chest to round the upper back as you feel your toes tipping past vertical.  It is recommended that this exercise be performed over a soft surface to avoid injury.

Process:

  • begin in a handstand
  • body should be tight and be vertically stacked, forming a straight line from toes all the way down to hands
  • allow toes to drift over head and maintain downward pressure with the arms
  • simultaneously tuck chin into chest and round upper back
  • when upper back makes contact with the floor, bend knees and drive them as close to the chest as possible
  • roll out by maintaining a tucked position and extend knees to finish in a stand
