Description:
A Headstand is generally one of the first skills that a gymnast will learn to develop the understanding of maintaining body control while being upside down. Unlike the handstand, which is a skill that requires more balance, a headstand is slightly easier when it comes to finding the balance point. When performing this skill, place a soft mat under your head to reduce neck stress and injury. Scale by performing tucked headstands.
Process:
- begin a tucked position on the floor
- maintain tucked position and place both hands in front on the floor, shoulder width apart
- place head in front of both hands so that the hands and head form a triangle
- elevate hips towards the ceiling while keeping both feet on the floor
- neck should be tight and both hand should be firmly planted on the floor
- slowly lift one leg up and find the balance
- once in a comfortable position, lift other leg up so that both legs join at the top
- engage core and form a straight line with your body
